Racial profiling is recognized as a form of discrimination. Specifically, it refers to incidents in which the acknowledgment of a person’s race is used in whole or in part to determine whether or not the law enforcement officer or government agency will consider that person to be a criminal suspect.
One of the most commonly practiced forms of racial profiling is that which has been found in practice among some law enforcement officers throughout New York City in the arrests that they make for traffic violations.
More specifically, this refers to officers who target certain sets of races when making traffic stops based upon their belief that one type of race is more prone to violating a traffic regulation than another.
Racial profiling, however, is not only a problem symptomatic among law enforcement officers who make traffic arrests. Discrimination based upon race, ethnicity, national origin and even religion can occur in many different situations, including arrests for both small and large criminal offenses alike.
Whether it’s realized or not, there can be no denying the fact that some officers and government officials tend to treat certain classes of race differently than others.
