Driving at night is more dangerous than driving during the day, and it can pose several challenges. It’s extremely important to be aware and watch out for hazards that are present when daylight disappears.

Several studies reveal that only 15 percent of vehicles circulate from 7 p.m. to 7 a.m., but they account for almost 30 percent of road injuries and deaths. Reduced visibility and difficulty in estimating speed and distance are main contributing factors to nighttime accidents.

Below, you’ll find a list of several safety tips from Confused.com that will help you stay safe and avoid accidents and injuries while driving at night:

  • Make sure your vehicle’s windows are clean to prevent glare and condensation.
  • Turn down your bright lights when facing another driver. Blinding drivers coming from the opposite direction causes many accidents.
  • Help other drivers see you in twilight by turning your headlights on before sunset and keeping them on for an hour after sunrise.
  • Have your eyes checked regularly by an ophthalmologist for complications which can affect your night vision.
  • Watch out for pedestrians walking on the side of a road, especially near bars and clubs.
  • Do not rush. Allow extra time for your journey so you’re not driving under pressure.
  • Yawning or blinking frequently, missing your exit, drifting from your lane, or hitting a rumble strip on the side of the road are signs that you need to pull over and take a break. Do not continue driving if you are feeling drowsy.
  • Seniors and people with limited vision should not attempt driving in the dark.
