Although the bus is not the most-used form of transportation in New York, millions of people use it on a daily basis. It is affordable, comfortable, and reaches many places the subway doesn’t. Unfortunately, commuters underestimate the risks of riding buses, even though accidents related to these vehicles occur all the time.

The dangers of riding a bus begin from the moment we reach the bus stop until we leave the bus and step down safely on the sidewalk.

Here are some safety tips that will make your bus travel more peaceful and enjoyable:

  1. Get to the bus stop on time. In today’s digital era, there are many apps that will tell you exactly when a bus will stop at your location. Use apps such as these so you can get to a stop calmly and reduce the chance for slip and fall accidents when getting on the bus.
  2. If there’s space, sit down. If not, hold on firmly to a handle. Most MTA buses do not provide seatbelts, so be prepared to protect yourself and your loved ones if an accident takes place. Failing to hold on to the handle is not only dangerous for yourself, but also for others who are standing next to you. Pay attention, and do not get distracted with your mobile device.
  3. If an accident takes place, make sure to get the driver’s badge number and wait on the bus until authorities arrive. Make a note of exactly where you were sitting or standing on the bus at the time of the accident. Almost always, the New York City Transit Authority will send their own investigators to respond to the scene of the accident. Make sure to get their names and badge numbers so they can be tracked down later if needed.
